Protecting nature reserves in Zambia

Nature conservation and restoration is a major ally in the fight against climate change. By working with nature we reduce climate vulnerability and increase resilience.

In Zambia, Robert Chimambo, a farmer and well know environmentalist, was at the heart of efforts to protect the Lower Zambezi National Park and Forest 27.

The Lower Zambezi National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important wildlife sanctuaries in the country. The Local Forest No. 27 is an app. 1,800-hectare forest surrounded by farms east of the Zambian capital Lusaka. Both reserves provide important ecosystem services.

Robert said: “By degrading the natural environment for the last 40 years we have disturbed the water cycle. This has reduced the amount of water flowing into our rivers and hydro energy production.”

Very sadly, Robert died on 27 January 2024. Your donations will help his family, friends and networks to continue standing up against mining, housing developments, industrial farming and other threats to nature reserves. All funds will go towards research, campaigning, legal fees or the provision of advice and support to local communities and stakeholders.
