Building a community climate change adaptation centre in Cameroon

Since November 2017 the North-West Region of Cameroon (one of two areas in the country previously under English, not French, colonial rule) is severally affected by civil unrest and efforts to create a new independent state. In addition, the adverse effects of climate change, such as changing rainfall patterns or droughts are an imminent threat to people’s dependence on agriculture for their livelihoods and subsistence.

To create a safe institutionalised environment where local communities can exchange experiences, maintain indigenous knowledge and enhance their capacity to adapt to climate change Augustine Njamnshi is building a community centre in the Donga district of the North-West Region. Augustine is a renown international climate justice activist who co-founded the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance, heads the Climate Energy Initiative and grew up in the area.

He explains: “It is the first centre of its kind in West Africa where we will document and preserve indigenous knowledge and the old will teach the young.”

Your donation will support the piecemeal construction of a centre that will is independent of the grid and relies on wind, water and sun for its energy needs. Any gift will be directly invested in local building materials and labour.
